Tumtum and Nutmeg Chapter Books

There’s a secret living inside a hidden broom cupboard in a ramshackle English cottage. Two secrets, actually! Two remarkable mice! It’s not easy to take care of human children when you’re so small… Still, these tiny heroes give it their best in this charming series of chapter books.

Who Are Tumtum and Nutmeg?

Tumtum and Nutmeg Nutmouse may be mice, but they are mighty. Whenever a crisis befalls Rose Cottage or the surrounding countryside, Tumtum and Nutmeg Nutmouse are ready to jump into the fray, solve the problem, fight the enemy, or outwit the troublemakers. And they do it all while maintaining the gracious lifestyle befitting the owners of Nutmouse Hall, of course.

With a crazy cast of friends and allies like General Marchmouse and his long-suffering wife, there’s no adventure too big for these tiny valiant adventurers!

About the Author and Series

tumtum and nutmeg series book 1 cover

The Tumtum and Nutmeg series got its start in an amusing way. The idea came to author Emily Bearn when she saw two mice scurrying around the kitchen of her home in Hammersmith, England. On the Tumtum and Nutmeg website, Bearn explains, “I started wondering what sort of lives they led there, and in my mind’s eye I pictured them living in a splendid house such as Nutmouse Hall.”

She also says that while she admires Tumtum for his level-headedness, “I suspect I’m more like Nutmeg, who is always in a dither.”

The series includes seven books. Each installment chronicles a separate escapade of Mr. and Mrs. Nutmouse and their friends. The books range in length from 107 pages to 256 pages. These fun chapter books make entertaining read-alouds for the whole family or easy chapter books for kids who love a little excitement.

About the Books

tumtum and nutmeg book 2 cover

The first book in the series, Tumtum and Nutmeg, begins when Nutmeg discovers how much the Mildew children need looking after. Together, she and Tumtum take on the challenge of fixing radiators, mending socks, and tending to whatever needs tending. Consequently, Arthur and Lucy begin to think helpful fairies are visiting them. But the Nutmouses’ plan for helping the family may come to a screeching halt when the children’s evil, mouse-hating Aunt Ivy arrives. What will it take to drive away the aunt and make life at Rose Cottage livable again?

General Marchmouse is in need of some excitement in The Great Escape, the second book in the series. Things have been too quiet since he fought the glorious battle at Rose Cottage. Now he’s itching for another thrilling test of courage and daring. Howver, he never expected to find himself trapped in the school’s gerbil cage! With the teacher threatening to pack him and all the gerbils off to a pet store (or worse), the Nutmouses have to work fast to save him—if they can!

When Arthur and Lucy Mildew set out on a camping trip in The Pirates’ Treasure, Tumtum and Nutmeg go along just to keep an eye on things. When General Marchmouse shows up and steals Arthur’s toy boat, the camping trip takes a sudden turn for the worse. Soon, the mice find themselves stranded on an island with a band of ferocious pirate rats! Will they ever get back home to Nutmouse Hall?

Because some books in the Tumtum and Nutmeg series are no longer in print, links to the Audible.com versions have been included in this post.

What a great thing you are doing for someone, Barb.

If you don’t think your friend will enjoy these books, you can check out our other chapter book reviews as well. Some, like these, are good beginning chapter books for those just becoming comfortable with reading. Others are more challenging and we recommend them more as great audiobooks or read alouds, or for those that have mastered reading.
